South Asia is home to 9 out of 10 most polluted cities globally.  The Indo Gangetic Plain and Himalayan Foothills (IGP-HF) region continues to face significant challenges related to air quality, with severe impact on health, economy, environment, and development. Coordinated action at the airshed level, where pollution flows across borders and regions, is critical to addressing these challenges in a faster, cheaper and more effective way, complementing targeted actions in each IGP-HF country to tackle key sources of pollution.  Air quality management needs a multifaceted approach, encompassing individual actions, government policies, technological advancements, and the private sector.

The region also faces another critical challenge of plastic pollution, with South Asia being the second largest contributor of solid waste globally —with over 334 million tons generated annually. The region’s transboundary rivers carry much of this solid and #plasticwaste from land to oceans and across borders.

To combat both air and plastic pollution, we need innovative and technological solutions. Our next OneSouthAsia conversation, on June 04, 2025, will invite speakers who are pioneering innovative solutions or using technology to combat pollution crisis in the region.
