COP28 Event: (Re)Building Momentum for a Just Transition

December 5, 2023
WB Pavilion and Online

Transitioning the highest emitting countries away from fossil fuels, particularly coal, is crucial to ensuring a clean energy future. The COP26 Declaration endorsed a coal phase down guided by Just Transition approaches that would support people and communities. More than 40 countries pledged to phase out coal power, while 190 countries committed to scaling up clean power and ensuring a Just Transition away from coal. These government commitments, as recorded in NDC and NZE targets, necessitate targeted actions to diversify economies in coal-dependent regions today, creating livelihood alternatives that will sustain people and communities, social and physical infrastructure, revenues and jobs.   Drawing from past lessons and new strategies for a just energy transition can build momentum and trust within coal regions that a coal phasedown begins with delivering on new opportunities, through re-investments that can foster sustainable livelihood alternatives.

This Just Transition event will bring together expert panelists to take stock of current activities and opportunities and strategies that enhance momentum towards a just energy transition.
