Video: Celebrate 10 Years Anniverary of the World Bank Group Korea Office
The World Bank Group (WBG) Korea Office was established in 2013 with the Republic of Korea (Korea) emerging as a key development partner of the WBG through its financial contributions, its thought leadership, and the unique development experience of being the first former aid recipient to join the Organization for Economic Development (OECD)’s Development Assistance Committee. The WBG, together with the Republic of Korea Ministry of Economy and Finance (MOEF), will host the 10th year anniversary event on May 24, 2023, to commemorate the milestones and the invaluable contribution of Korea to the development community through WBG programs in the past decade. The event will showcase how the financing and development lessons from Korea impacted WBG client countries.

Difference Maker: Financing for Future, Innovation for Growth
Video: FCI Seoul Center: 10 Years of Financial Sector Development in East Asia and the Pacificn
Since 2012, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MOEF) of the Republic of Korea has contributed US$37.4 million towards the Korea Trust Fund managed and implemented by the Seoul Center for Finance and Innovation (Seoul Center). The Trust Fund has supported financial sector stability and development in East Asia and the Pacific region, contributing to 57 key reform advancements in countries between 2012-2022. Indeed, the Republic of Korea’s partnership with the World Bank Group and the Seoul Center has made a huge difference in the developing economies of East Asia and Pacific region. A few highlights of key achievements include strengthening of the capacity of financial sector authorities to prevent, manage and resolve financial crisis, thereby contributing to the promotion of a sound and stable financial sector in East Asia and the Pacific; carrying out legal and regulatory reforms to provide stronger foundation for operations and supervision of capital markets; setting up a supervision framework from scratch for the casino and real estate sectors; and supporting access to finance using social media and popular culture.
The theme for the Finance, Competitiveness and Innovation (FCI) Seoul Center 10th anniversary event is “Difference Maker: Financing for Future, Innovation for Growth.” It is a commemoration of the Seoul Center’s 10-year journey together with the Republic of Korea. The event will reflect on the successes and development impact of Seoul Center grants in the East Asia and Pacific region. Building also on the expanded Seoul Center program on innovation and leveraging technology for development, the event will look ahead with lessons learned including from Korea’s own development experience and its relevance for developing economies in the region and globally.
The 10th anniversary event will provide a platform for officials from client countries that have benefited from the Seoul Center support to showcase the achievements of the past decade and discuss potential challenges in the coming years. Moreover, the program will provide an opportunity for select Korean partners to speak to their contribution to the development experiences of the countries from East Asia and the Pacific.

The Republic of Korea’s partnership with the World Bank Group (WBG) has grown over the last 50 years from a recipient country to a key partner in cross-border investments and a significant source of mobilization. Since the WBG re-established its presence in Korea in 2014, IFC and MIGA have been working closely with the Korean private sector to promote sustainable investment in emerging markets. IFC has since provided financing for projects involving Korean partners and banks worth US$7.0 billion in long-term financing as of December 2022. MIGA has provided guarantees totaling around US$558 million for Korean companies’ overseas projects.
On the sidelines of the WBG Korea’s 10th year anniversary, IFC and MIGA will co-host a side event followed by a gala dinner to celebrate a decade of innovation with the Korean private sector on May 23rd 2023. The event will illustrate the critical role of IFC and MIGA as key partners for Korean corporates and financial institutions to expand and invest in developing countries. This festive and inspirational event will bring together clients and partners of both IFC and MIGA including Korean businesses, banks, public institutions as well as former IFC and MIGA representatives to share key lessons learned and to showcase the successful evolution of partnerships with the Korean private sector. The event will also provide participants with a forum to network and explore new business opportunities especially in climate finance in emerging markets.

Innovative Korea Report: Leveraging Innovation and Technology to Development

The World Bank Group (WBG) Korea Office is launching the flagship report, “Innovative Korea: Lessons on Leveraging Innovation and Technology for Development,” which reviews Korea’s transition to a high-income economy and aims to distill policy lessons for developing countries. The report focuses on the last three decades of Korea’s economic development and analyzes Korea’s transition to a high-income economy in the 1990s, the impact of the Asian Financial Crisis and the subsequent policy and institutional reforms that reinvigorated Korea’s economic growth.
The Korea Development Institute (KDI), who partnered with WBG in the preparation of the report, will co-host the book launch of the Innovative Korea Report on May 26, 2023, with WBG to commemorate the invaluable contribution of Korea to development community.

Celebrating 10 Years of Learning for Development Effectiveness: Korea Program for Operational Knowledge (KPOK) Anniversary Event

The year 2023 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Korea Program for Operational Knowledge (KPOK), a successful partnership between the World Bank Group (WBG) and the Republic of Korea. Over the past decade, KPOK has provided development knowledge and learning to help low- and middle-income countries address complex development challenges. The Open Learning Campus (OLC) of the WBG has been at the center of KPOK implementation at the same time playing a leading role in establishing the global education ecosystem in development.
Sharing the objectives of providing actionable capacity building and knowledge sharing programs for WBG client countries to tackle development challenges, OLC and KPOK were able to mutually reinforce each other, building strong partnership with various layers of Korean partners across sectors who are willing to share Korean development experience with global development community. Even amidst the challenges posed by the recent COVID-10 pandemic, this partnership has grown stronger, adapting to diverse delivery models to reach a wider audience.
This half-day event is designed to bring together key Korean partners and World Bank counterparts to celebrate the 10 years of successful collaboration. Korean partners will showcase best practices across various collaboration models. Additionally, insightful discussions will take place, focusing on the lessons learned from past experiences to inform and enhance KPOK as the program embarks on another decade of success. Participants are encouraged to leverage the best practices to foster more vigorous collaboration with KPOK in the coming years.
