Disasters and climate change are having profound impacts on schools, and, in turn, on children’s education and lives. This year, the International Day for Disaster Reduction (October 13) focused on safe and resilient infrastructure. In light of this theme, the World Bank’s Global Program for Safer Schools (GPSS) will launch its global platform for resilient school infrastructure on October 29th.

The event will look at the mounting pressures inflicted on the education sector by disasters and climate change impacts, and showcase the Roadmap for Safer and Resilient Schools (RSRS) and the Global Library of School Infrastructure (GLOSI), key tools developed by GPSS to support governments and development practitioners in designing risk reduction programs across large stocks of school facilities.

Funded by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), the GPSS aims to boost efficient, large-scale investments for the safety and resilience of school infrastructure at risk from natural hazards, contributing to high-quality learning environments for children. The GPSS has reached over 20 countries and helped improve the safety and lives of millions of children since its inception in 2014.
