As the Minister of Finance, Taro Aso indicated, aging society will be one critical element in the G20 Japan Presidency 2019. Taking this opportunity, the World Bank Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC) is organizing the Age-friendly city development side event, with UN-Habitat Fukuoka and Fukuoka City. TDLC has organized a Technical Deep Dive (TDD) on Aging Cities in collaboration with the World Bank’ Urban and Social Development teams in May 2018, and the team also had an occasion to dispatch a Japanese delegation to Santiago Chile in November 2018, as a part of the follow-up action to the TDD on the Aging Cities.
The side event will be composed of 3 main pillars: 1) Effects of Demographic Change on Strategic City Planning, 2) Retrofitting Infrastructure and Urban Service Provisions, and 3) Fiscal Implication of Aging Cities. City leaders, community leaders, universal design experts, academics and experts from international organizations will discuss strategies and practices to address aging challenges in urban cities.
