Is fertilizer use in Africa still low? What do farmers say about post-harvest loss? What do we know about rural non-farm household enterprises? The Agriculture in Africa – Telling Facts from Myths project brings the Living Standards Measurement Study-Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) data to life to answer these and many other questions. The project revisits conventional wisdoms to assess their current validity in the context of Africa’s rapid economic growth, increasing urbanization, and the new era of high food prices.
The LSMS-ISA surveys are unusually rich, nationally representative, multi-topic panel household surveys conducted in 8 sub-Saharan African countries. These publicly available datasets contain detailed information on agriculture, as well as critical modules on non-agricultural facets of livelihoods (including employment, income, consumption, shocks, assets, and nutrition).
Join us for this exciting two-part presentation in which Gero Carletto (LSMS Manager) illustrates the intricacies of the LSMS-ISA data and Luc Christiaensen (Lead Agriculture Economist) presents key findings from the myth-busting project on agriculture in Africa.
