40 Years of Partnerships between China and the World Bank Group

Forty years ago, World Bank President Robert McNamara led the Bank's first official mission to China. Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping met the mission and said: “We are very poor. We have lost touch with the world. We need the World Bank to catch up. We can do it without you, but we can do it quicker and better with you."
