Maninder S. Gill is the World Bank Group Director of Environment and Social Policy and Operations.
Prior to this, Mr. Gill was the Director for the Environment and Social Standards Department in the Operations Policy and Country Services (OPCS) Vice Presidency, and concurrently the Chief Environmental and Social Standards Officer (CESSO), a position that he held from July 2021 to December 2025.
From July 2019 to June 2021, he was the Global Director for the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), and, from July 2014 to June 2019, he was the Director for Social Development. Prior to this assignment, he was the Director responsible for the design and implementation of the World Bank’s internal institutional reforms under WBG President Jim Yong Kim.
Mr. Gill joined the Bank in 1995 and has held several positions in the social development sector over the years, including as Sector Manager for the social development units in the Bank’s Europe and Central Asia Region, and the Latin America and Caribbean Region.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Gill worked in the Indian civil service, where his assignments included being the chief executive of a medium-sized town, director of rural development programs at the district level, and project manager for the resettlement program associated with a large hydro-cum-irrigation project.
Mr. Gill is an Indian national and holds an MBA in Finance and Marketing from Punjabi University.
