Hideki Higashi


Prior to joining the World Bank in March 2018, he held various positions in the academia and development.

Most recently, he was Health Economist for Japan International Cooperation Agency in Zambia. Between 2008 and 2015, he was in the academia at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, and the School of Population Health, University of Queensland in Australia. He made key contributions to a number of global research projects including the Global Burden of Disease Study and Disease Control Priorities 3rd edition.

Before 2008 he worked at different development and humanitarian organizations in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Sierra Leone.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Sophia University in Japan, Master of Public Health from the University of New South Wales in Australia, MSc in Health Economics from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, and PhD in Health Economics from the University of Queensland.
