Demetrios Papathanasiou

Dr. Papathanasiou leads more than 100 professionals within the Energy Global Department of the World Bank Group, providing strategic direction and overseeing knowledge and learning, corporate reporting, trust funds, and partnerships.

With more than 25 years of experience at the World Bank Group, he has worked extensively on energy and infrastructure across Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific. His work spans energy policy development, diverse power generation technologies—including thermal, hydropower, solar, wind, and geothermal—and the leadership of complex utility reforms and large public‑private partnership transactions.

An electrical engineer by training, Dr. Papathanasiou holds an MSc in Environmental Technology and a PhD in Energy and Environment from Imperial College London.
