Amparo Palacios López

Senior Economist, Development Data Group, Development Economics

Amparo Palacios-López is a Senior Economist for the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS), the World Bank’s flagship household survey program housed at the Development Data Group. Her primary area of research is development, with a focus on labor, gender, and welfare. She conducts research on survey methods, focusing on labor, gender, and agriculture. The recent focus of her methodological research has been on labor and gender working jointly with the Gender Group of the World Bank and the International Labor Organization.

As a member of the Living Standards Measurement Study team, Amparo supports surveys in several countries of Sub-Saharan Africa and leads the design of the questionnaires used in surveys in Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. She is part of the team of coordinators of the World Bank Household Survey Working Group and its Technical Review Panel. She led the Questionnaire Working Group jointly with the Bank’s Poverty Global Practice, designing the modules that were implemented by the WB in phone surveys during the COVID-19 pandemic.

AmparoS has a Ph.D. in Development Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, and holds an M.A. in Economics from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

    Living Standards Measurement Study

    The Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) and the Living Standards Measurement Study-Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) were established by the Development Research Group to explore ways of improving the type and quality of household data collected by statistical offices in developing countries. The goal is to foster increased use of household data as a basis for policy decisionmaking.
