Information Note
Training Design:
Here are the structure, design and main learning activities of the workshop:
(a) During Phase-1:
Pre-Workshop Internet/Web-based Briefing (3 weeks), the following activities will be carried out:
- A Pre-Workshop Website will be set-up for participants to be briefed on the workshop objectives, programs, and preparatory tasks to be undertaken before departing for Singapore. Most workshop reading materials and other reference documents will be made available through the Website.
- A Pre-Workshop Discussion Forum will be made available in the Pre-Workshop Website. Participants can input their training needs and suggest specific issues or topics to be covered during Phase-2 activities through the Forum or E-mail. This Forum will also be used to introduce the participants and resource persons to one another before the face-to-face meeting during Phase-2 in Singapore.
(b) During Phase-2:
Peer Learning and Group Training (10 days), participants will be engaged in the following activities:
- Study various interactive training and learning models using interactive technologies, and discuss issues and challenges of implementing a technology enabled curriculum. Similarities and differences between using interactive technologies to support distance learning and as tools to complement "conventional" face-to-face" or group training will be identified.
- Identify and discuss skills requirement for an online trainer/coach: content delivery, learner engagement strategies, facilitation and collaboration strategies, reflection and assessment.
- Review, assess and critique the various ILT tools and application programs which will be demonstrated to, and tried out by, the participants (through hands-on exercises using synchronous and asynchronous communication tools).
- Identify and discuss features, strengths and weaknesses of various interactive technologies for specific learning objectives, and the operational and management procedures for designing, producing and utilizing multi-media communication and materials (i.e., graphic, audio, video, simulation, animation etc.) in support of interactive and participatory learning strategies, process and methods.
- Identify practical problems and actual felt needs in improving training quality and discuss possible strategies for adapting or applying innovative learning technologies to resolve such problems.
- Analyze and discuss important management operation implications for incorporating ILT applications to support training activities, including resource (i.e., staff, time and cost) requirements.
- Write daily "journal" notes, by selecting the most practical and applicable concepts and tools which can be applied in improving their respective training programs. These ideas and principles will need to be incorporated or used to prepare a strategy or a work plan for implementing such activities at their own institutions during Phase-3 of this workshop.
(c) During Phase-3:
Post-Workshop Follow-Up: Free After-Training Coaching Service
(3 months):
Workshop participants will be divided into several "Virtual Peer-Learning Groups (VPLGs)" with 6-8 members each assisted by an Online Coach who will serve as a facilitator/resource person. Each participant is expected to develop, implement, and share the results/experiences of, the strategy & work plan (i.e. ILT Utilization Strategy Plan) for the applications of the interactive learning technologies in improving the quality of their training programs.
The Phase-3 learning and experience sharing activities will be done at the participants' own home-based. Online coaching and distance mentoring, as well as web-based virtual discussion may be carried out during the 3-month period. Reports on participants' experience and lessons learned from their follow up activities in applying ILT to improve their training programs will be posted, shared, and discussed in the Post-Workshop Website which will also be used as a forum for continued professional networking and experience sharing.
