Community Driven Development in Urban Upgrading

This note is a brief review of CDD in World Bank-assisted urban upgrading projects.

Community Driven Development Approaches in Housing Sector Projects in Transition Economies

The objective of this note is to identify the role of CDD in the housing sector in transition economies, to highlight the varied CDD approaches that have been used thus far in World Bank projects, and to develop recommendations for emerging issues.

Community-Driven Development in Local Government Capacity Building Projects: Emerging Approaches in Africa

This note discusses the interface between CDD and decentralization. In particular, it focuses on the aspects of decentralization programs related to local government capacity building, where the practical application of CDD principles becomes meaningful.

Summary of Slum Upgrading and Participation: Lessons from Latin America   (PDF 84.4 KB)

Presents the results of a study on participatory strategies in slum upgrading , provision of services for the urban poor, and low-income housing initiatives in areas of urban poverty in Latin America. The study was carried out by the Brazilian consultancy Diagonal Urbana, under a contract with the Private Sector Development Division of the World Bank, with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

Economic Analysis of Urban Upgrading Projects   (PDF 545 KB)

In Latin America, the urban population jumped from 50 percent in 1960 to 75 percent in 2000 (108 and 389 million respectively), this makes the region the most urbanized in the world. Municipalities throughout Latin America are struggling to keep up with the growth rates while in a difficult economic environment, making the sustainable provision of basic services a huge challenge.

Brazil Progressive Low-Income Housing: Alternatives for the Poor

(PDF 670 KB) This report aims to analyze key aspects of the low-income housing sector in Brazil and to provide an analytical framework for reviewing alternatives to addressing the lack of adequate formal housing and urban services for the poor.

Highlights

World Bank seminar on Modern Heritage Conservation and Management - A UNESCO Initiative, March 2003 is now online at B-SPAN, a webcasting station for development.

Ethiopia Cultural Heritage Project. The World Bank supports the Government of Ethiopia in its efforts to the conservation of cultural heritage assets.

Cultural Heritage Conservation in Urban Upgrading. The historic city of Ningbo in the coastal province of Zhejiang is an example of a city working to resolve the inherent conflicts between upgrading older urban areas and conserving cultural heritage.

Yunnan: Earthquake Reconstruction, Urban Upgrading, and Heritage Conservations. As part of an earthquake rebuilding program, infrastructure was repaired, housing reconstruction grants were made to low-income families and cultural heritage sites were conserved.
