The
Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) and the Gender
and Development Board (GDB), along with the Regional Vice-Presidencies,
organized gender workshops in Manila, Nairobi, Quito,
and Warsaw, covering four regions of the Banks operations.
Several development partners also collaborated in these
efforts: in Manila, the Bank's partner was the National
Commission for the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW), in
Nairobi, UNDP and The International Service for National
Agricultural Research (ISNAR) were co-organizers, in Quito
it was the Inter-American Development Bank, while UNIFEM
and UNECE collaborated in Warsaw. In addition, the Swiss
Agency for Development Corporation (SDC) was involved
in all four of the workshops, and without their support
none of the above would have been possible.
This
series of gender workshops, conducted over eighteen months,
served the dual purpose of consulting with civil society
and government about their perceptions of the Banks
gender and development policy and actions, and also strengthened
awareness of gender and development issues as viewed by
client stakeholders. These consultations fed into IEG s
Gender Evaluation as well as into the GDBs revision
of the Banks gender strategy. Additionally, for
the Bank's development partners, the workshops helped
to provide forums for addressing gender issues relating
to their individual institutions. All four proceedings
"chapters" produced from these workshops are
based entirely on the presentations given at the workshops
as well as on the views of the stakeholders.
