About The Independent Evalaution Group (IEG)

About IEG
MANDATE

Mission: Enhancing development effectiveness through excellence and independence in evaluation.

Objective: To draw lessons from Bank experience, and to provide an objective basis for assessing the results of the Bank's work. IEG-WB improves Bank work by identifying
and disseminating the lessons learned from experience and by framing recommendations drawn from its evaluation findings.

Reporting: IEG-WB is an independent unit within the World Bank. Its reports are transmitted to Bank's Board of Executive Directors through the Director-General,
Evaluation.


WHO WE ARE

Established: 1973 (32 years)

FY06 budget: $21.8 million (FY05); historically 1.5 % of World Bank’s admin budget

Staffing: 90 staff members

Evaluation Partnerships:

Partnerships with Bilateral Cooperation Agencies: These include: Ministry of Foreign Affairs/NORAD (Norway), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (Switzerland); Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation (the Netherlands); and United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID).

IEG-WB also participates in the DAC Network on Development Evaluation.

Partnerships with Multilateral Organizations: These include the evaluation offices of the UN system through the Evaluation Cooperation Group; evaluation offices of the UN system through the UN Evaluation Group.

Partnerships for Evaluation Capacity Development: IEG-WB has been active in this area since the mid-1970s and has forged partnerships with several developing country governments to support their efforts in this area.

Training Partnerships: IEG-WB has partnered with Carleton University, Canada to organize the “International Program for Development Evaluation Training” (IPDET). The comprehensive, international program is designed to help attendees develop skills to conduct meaningful evaluations of development interventions.


KEY LINK TO WORLD BANK'S STRATEGY

In line with the Bank’s greater emphasis on delivering results, IEG-WB is increasing its impact evaluation work.

IEG-WB is expanding it capacity-building and dissemination activities in order to strengthen developing country capacity and expertise.

IEG-WB’s reports provide direct input into improving the development effectiveness of the Bank’s work.

Global evaluations provide a more holistic and accurate view of the development environment.
