IEG Impact Evaluations: Ghana Basic Education

Data Set

The GSS/IEG 2003 Household and School Survey is a nationally representative survey covering 1,740 Ghanaian households, 706 schools and 3129 teachers. The data were collected between January and March 2003 by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and the Ministry of Educaton. The survey was part of an impact evaluation of the World bank support to basic education in Ghana conducted by the Operations and Evaluation Department of the World Bank. The survey was designed in such a way to ensure comparability with the Ghana Living Standard Survey of 1988/89 (GLSS2), conducted by the GSS with World Bank support at the onset of the educational reforms. The data include the results of math, English and local language tests applied to household members aged between 9-55. The test instruments are included in the survey documentation.

The data can be downloaded as compressed zip files to be decompressed using Winzip. The zip file STATA contains the data saved in stata 6, while the zip file SPSS contains the data in spss format. Data variables and values are not labeled, and the use of the data requires consultation of the survey questionnaires available in the supporting documentation. The file README lists all the data files and shows how they are linked to different sections of the survey questionnaires.

Data available formats: spss.zip or stata.zip

Documentation (contains manuals, questionnaires and tests): documentation.zip
