IEG Good Practice Awards: 2005 Winners
Country Program Award
Winner
Armenia FY93-02 Country Program
Reason for Selection
The Bank’s country program during the period FY93-02, in tandem with the IMF and other donors, has made a major contribution to the maintenance of macroeconomic stability in Armenia, which facilitated the economic recovery and growth (averaging 7.4% per year during the period). Although poverty remains widespread, it has been falling since the late 1990s. The Bank’s country program has been highly relevant and well-coordinated— there were excellent linkages between Economic and Sector Work and lending, and the investment and adjustment operations were mutually supportive. The Bank has played an important role in areas such as the development of a regulatory framework, legal and judicial reform, and the creation of means-tested poverty benefits bringing about substantial institutional development impact.
