Information for Managers of LSMS Surveys: Manual

The following is a description of:
Grosh, M. & Muņoz, J. 1996. A Manual for Planning and Implementing the Living Standards Measurement Study Surveys. LSMS Working Paper #126, The World Bank.

The manual is designed to guide the many collaborators involved in planning Living Standard Measurement Study (LSMS) surveys -- staff from planning, statistical and sectoral agencies in government, and from academia, development agencies and technical assistance firms -- through the process of planning and implementing an LSMS survey. The manual (which is being translated into Russian and Spanish) provides practical information that previously was only available by word-of-mouth, which enables the reader to learn from LSMS experience. Topics covered in the manual are: survey budgets and work plans; questionnaire formatting and development; sample design; field operations; data management and dissemination; ideas for spurring data analysis. The extensive set of quality controls used in LSMS surveys is explained in detail. From there the manual focuses on the process of adapting the LSMS methodology to each country's individual objectives and constraints.
