Information
for Managers of LSMS Surveys:
Questionnaires |
Developers of new surveys may find it useful to refer to old
questionnaires as well as to guidelines on how to develop
questionnaires. The following LSMS materials are available:
1. Annotated Questionnaires
- Three questionnaires are available in annotated form in
the LSMS Working Paper Series.
- The Côte d'Ivoire 1985 questionnaire (Abstract) was
the first "prototypical" LSMS survey.
- The Kagera questionnaire (Abstract)
was designed to study the impact of adult mortality in a
region of Tanzania. The questionnaire puts more emphasis
than the "prototypical" LSMS on intrahousehold
issues, morbidity, mortality, health care utilization and
expenditures, transfers and child fostering and is
therefore more complex than most LSMS questionnaires.
- The Model Living Standards Measurement Study Survey Questionnaire for
the Countries of the Former Soviet Union was
drafted as a starting point for those working on
questionnaires in former Soviet republics. The first
round of adaptations to a transition economy has been
made, but further adaptations to specific settings are
required. The questionnaires and guidelines for required
adaptations are available in Russian
and English in
Word format as well as on paper. For copies of the questionnaires in paper
form, contact the LSMS office by e-mail or mail
(address). An abstract of
the guidelines is available on line.
2. Questionnaires from all LSMS Surveys
- DECRG maintains archives of questionnaires used in LSMS
surveys. These are available by sending e-mail or mail (address ) to LSMS. Describe
briefly the country and issues the planned survey is to
cover, and state what languages the survey planners can
read. We will send a few questionnaires that might be the
most pertinent models for that case. Most materials are
available in the language of the country where the survey
was conducted, some are available in English as well. A
detailed summary of the questionnaires used in Ghana is provided on
the web site. These are as close to a
"prototype" as the LSMS has.
3. Questionnaires Available for Downloading
- Questionnaires are available
for downloading for the countries where LSMS surveys have been
done. In some cases, the data are also available. By coincidence, in several of these
cases, the questionnaires are somewhat abridged from the
"typical" LSMS questionnaire and thus do not
provide models for all the modules often covered in LSMS
surveys.
4. Guidelines for Developing Questionnaires
-
Designing Household Survey Questionnaires for Developing Countries: Lessons from 15 Years of
the Living Standards Measurement Study, edited by Margaret Grosh and
Paul Glewwe, covers key topics in the design of household surveys
with many suggestions for customizing surveys to local circumstances and
improving data quality.
LSMS Working Paper 126 (Abstract)
contains a chapter on developing questionnaires. It
covers the institutional processes and formatting issues
in detail.
LSMS Working Paper 34 (Abstract)
provides general guidelines for adapting the content of
questionnaires to new settings.
LSMS Working Paper 130 (Abstract)
updates paper 34 and uses examples specific to the former
Soviet Union.
Selected research papers
on improving the policy relevance of LSMS surveys are available.
