Which Data Sets Can Be Immediately Accessed From This Web Site?
If you decide to download LSMS data from this site, you will be required to fill in a data use agreement form. In completing the form, you will be complying with the agreements reached by all parties in implementing the particular survey, and also helping DECRG substantiate demand for this service. (Evidence of demand for this service increases the chance that more survey data will be posted at this site.) The form simply states that downloading the data obligates you to cite the source of the data and to send copies of papers to the LSMS Division of the World Bank (and usually also to the statistical agency of the selected country). The form also requires you to state your name, address, and intended use of the data. If your browser doesn't support forms (or fails to forward you to the data page upon completing the form), contact LSMS and you will receive instructions on how to progress to the page with the data files.
To both provide incentives for accessing data via the Net and to reduce our administrative burdens, DECRG does not charge for retrieving data from the Net. We do charge for sending data out via US post. (See pricing policy for details.) The LSMS data currently available from this Web Site are listed below. The 1992 through 2001 Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Surveys (RLMS) are available at their web site, to which we provide a link (also below).
Documentation for LSMS Survey Data:
Posting LSMS data on the Web is one product of a larger effort (undertaken from 1993 to present by DECRG) to improve the accessability of LSMS survey data. Another product has been improved documentation of the LSMS surveys. DECRG has produced documents which provide detailed, basic information regarding several LSMS surveys.
The documents often contain enough information to determine whether the data are appropriate for a proposed project. If after reviewing the basic information document, you are not sure whether the data are appropriate, you may wish to request a questionnaire via e-mail (LSMS@Worldbank.org) or post . The documents are also very helpful (if not necessary) to the user who already has aquired the data.
Typically these survey information documents contain descriptions of : the purpose of the survey, the various questionnaires (for example household, community, price questionnaires), the sample design, the organization of the survey team, the raw data files, the constructed data files, codes not contained in the questionnaire, and other documents useful for the analysis of the data.
The documents are all available in PDF and some are also available in compressed (via PKzip) PostScript format. If you are not sure which format you prefer, see the page on LSMS Document Formats. Each cell in the table below lists the language of the document, the format, and the size. Note that some countries have separate documents for each year (e.g. Peru), while others have one document for several years (e.g. Jamaica).
