The 2001 Bosnia and Herzegovina Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) survey provides individual level and household level socio-economic data from 5,402 households drawn from urban and rural areas in the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska. The sample was designed to allow analyses of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole, by entity, and by urban/rural locations. The survey was carried out by the State Agency for Statistics for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republika Srpska Institute of Statistics and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Institute of Statistics with the technical and financial assistance of the Government of Japan, the Government of Sweden (SIDA), the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (DFID), and the World Bank.
In 2002, 2003, and 2004, a subsample of the households interviewed in the 2001 LSMS were re-interviewed. These panel surveys, known as the Living in Bosnia and Herzegovina Panel Surveys, were commissioned by the Unit for Economic Planning and Implementation of the BiH Medium Term Development Strategy (EPPU) of the Council of Ministers of BiH. They were carried out by the State Agency for Statistics for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republika Srpska Institute of Statistics, and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Institute of Statistics with the technical and financial assistance from the Department for International Development (DFID) of the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The 2004 Wave 4 survey collected information using one questionnaire. The household questionnaire collects information at both the household and individual levels. Information collected at the household level includes housing and durable goods, agricultural activities, and consumption. Information collected at the individual level includes demographics, education, health, employment, migration, and values and opinions. Unlike the earlier panel surveys, the Wave 4 contains the Wave 1 consumption module and a few other LSMS items to allow direct comparability with the Wave 1 data. The welfare measure for Wave 4 was calculated using the same methodology as used in the 2001 survey. To obtain a copy of the 2001 welfare measure, you will need to download the data from the 2001 survey.
Of the households interviewed in 2001, 2,713 were identified for re-interview in Wave 4. Because new households were allowed as individuals from the original households moved away to form their own households, 3,038 households were identified during fieldwork. Of these, 2,969 were interviewed.
For the best use of the database, it is highly recommended that users read all of the documentation that is provided for using the data (see below "Documentation for the 2004 Living in Bosnia and Herzegovina Survey").
Data files and necessary supporting documentation can be downloaded from the Net. To obtain the data, first read the sections describing the formats of the data and documentation. Download the documentation, then fill in the 'Data Use Agreement Form', and finally download the data.
