Bosnia and Herzegovina 2001: Living Standards Measurement Survey

The 2001 Bosnia and Herzegovina Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) survey provides individual level and household level socio-economic data from  5,402 households drawn from urban and rural areas in the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska.  The sample was designed to allow analyses of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole, by entity, and by urban/rural locations.   The survey was carried out by the State Agency for Statistics for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republika Srpska Institute of Statistics and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Institute of Statistics with the technical and financial assistance of the Government of Japan, the Government of Sweden (SIDA), the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (DfID), and the World Bank.

The information for the LSMS survey was collected using one questionnaire.  The household questionnaire collects information at both the household and individual levels.   Information collected at the household level includes housing, consumption and expenditures, non-agricultural household enterprises, and agricultural activity.   Information collected at the individual level includes demographics, education, health, employment, credit, privatization vouchers and certificates, migration, and social assistance.

In 2002 and 2003, a sub-sample of the households interviewed in the 2001 LSMS were re-interviewed.  The questionnaires for these surveys are provided with the documentation for the 2001 LSMS (see below).  Additional information can be found at the Bosnia and Herzegovina Panel Survey Page.

For the best use of the database, it is highly recommended that users read all of the documentation that is provided for using the data (see below "Documentation for the 2001 Bosnia and Herzegovina LSMS").

Data files and necessary supporting documentation can be downloaded from the Net. To obtain the data, first read the sections describing the formats of the data and documentation. Download the documentation, then fill in the 'Data Use Agreement Form', and finally download the data.
