Box 1: The New Economic School (NES), Moscow

· NES offers the best master’s program in economics in the Russian Federation, with 40 students graduating every year.

· In 2000 NES hired its first two graduates, after they had completed their doctoral studies abroad.

· NES now has the best modern economics library in the Russian Federation, and it is open to the public. The NES data center is one of the best in Russia, second only to that of RECEP.

· NES offers a summer school program and about 20 outreach workshops in which faculty from institutions across the Russian Federation participate. NES also coordinates training activities with EERC: while EERC teaches researchers, NES retrains trainers.

· NES works with universities in the regions to develop new courses, hold outreach workshops, host faculty at NES, and collaborate in research. Along with EERC, it is a regional partner of the Global Development Network. (Editor’s note: See article on page 16.)
