A Technology of Growing Importance for Developing Countries
Gas-turbine (GT) based technology is of
great interest to developing countries because it is the most efficient technology for
converting fossil fuels into electricity and because of ongoing research and development
to make it even more efficient. In addition, gas turbines generate relatively low levels
of greenhouse gases (GHG), such as carbon dioxide. Finally, GT based technology has the
flexibility to deal with situations where natural gas is not readily available (a
situation that frequently occur in developing countries) because it can handle a wide
variety of low calorific value and contaminated fuels, the latter requiring a lot of care
for their successful operation.
