Insurance for the World's Crop Diversity, in the Frozen Ground of the Arctic Circle

The Global Seed Vault in Svalbard, Norway, holds duplicates of the holdings of local seed banks from all over the world, insuring against loss and bolstering food security. Maintained in partnership with the Norwegian government, the Global Crop Diversity Trust and the Nordic Genetic Resources Center, it includes samples from the international collections of the agriculture research consortium CGIAR, which include the world's largest and most diverse collections of rice, wheat, maize and beans.
