Sri Lanka: A City in Transition - Work in Progress June 2013

The Metro Colombo Urban Development Project is providing support to Colombo Municipal Council by upgrading a total of 50.8 hectares of land to improve the quality of life for Colombo's residents. The Key objective of the Town Hall Square Development intervention is to physically improve and functionally upgrade the Town Hall Square and surrounding area. The Town Hall Square’s close proximity to the Central Business District and the National Hospital means everyday nearly 60,000 people and 30,000 motor vehicles pass through the area. Upgrading and rehabilitation of the road network is expected to ease up congestion and improve traffic flow through the area. The construction of walking trails with adequate drainage facilities, rehabilitation of road network and existing drainage structures and other associated drainage improvements in the area will further enable flood management in the area. Ongoing interventions in the Town Hall Square will enhance the iconic image of the city of Colombo while improving the public’s access to all historical buildings and other landmarks.Upgrading of the Vihara Maha Devi Park located will enhance functionality and recreational use of the park which is the only largest, green space available for the public. The Metro Colombo Urban Development Project is also providing on-the-job capacity building support to Colombo Municipal Council.
