World Bank Managing Director to visit Argentina

July 10-13 trip focuses on supporting poverty reduction and sustainable development efforts

Washington DC, July 8, 2016 — Sri Mulyani Indrawati, World Bank Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, will begin a four-day trip to Argentina next week to visit development projects in the country and to meet with government officials, civil society and private sector leaders in order to support poverty reduction efforts.

Sri Mulyani Indrawati will meet with President Mauricio Macri, Cabinet Chief Marcos Peña, Minister of Treasury and Public Finances Alfonso Prat-Gay, and other federal and provincial government officials to discuss Argentina’s priorities and the Bank’s continuing role in promoting sustainable development and shared prosperity in the country.

She will visit several projects the World Bank is supporting in Argentina. This includes the construction of a sewerage collection system in the Matanza-Riachuelo River basin. Ms. Indrawati will also go to poor neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, with local government officials, to examine efforts to alleviate poverty by addressing infrastructure needs such as improved water and sanitation services. In addition, she will travel to the Northern province of Salta, where she will meet with authorities and visit a primary health clinic, as well as urban and water and sanitation projects.

Indrawati will be accompanied by Jorge Familiar, World Bank Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean, and by Jesko Hentschel, Country Director for Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Background

The current World Bank portfolio in Argentina focuses on health, environment, education, infrastructure and social protection. It consists of 22 projects for a total of US$5.8 billion. It also includes two grants from the Global Environment Facility and one from the Montreal Protocol Trust-Fund.
