Ulaanbaatar, September 7, 2007 – 37 innovative projects out of 190 finalists in the first Mongolia Development Marketplace (MDM) were declared as winners and awarded grants amounting to US$326,000.0 at the award ceremony in Sukhbaatar square. The President of Mongolia N. Enkhbayar, Vice President of the World Bank East Asia and Pacific Region James W. Adams and CEOs of the partner organizations of MDM handed over the awards to the winners at the ceremony. The quality and supply of and access to social services such as infrastructure, education, health, water, ICT etc still fall short. The lack of such services affects everyone, but particularly the disadvantaged people such as those live in Ger Districts of Ulaanbaatar and rural Mongolia. To encourage new ideas and new partnership approach for the development is one of the key objectives of the MDM. “To create platform where ideas and also resources could meet with each other and get connected for exchange and find resources to implement the ideas is the most important” said Arshad Sayed, Country Manager and Resident Representative of the World Bank in Mongolia. Development organizations, private companies and public have visited the market place and acquainted with the projects that were publicly displayed. Global Environment Fund and Small Grant Program of UNDP and Mobicom Company have chosen 3 projects in addition to the 37 winners’ projects to provide requested fund for their implementation.
