TICAD VI: Strengthening Climate and Disaster Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa

Development (TICAD VI) in Nairobi, Kenya. The World Bank Africa Disaster Risk Management team’s side event brought together over 100 participants from African governments, African Union Commission, African Development Bank, World Meteorological Organization (WMO), development partners including Agence Française de Développement (AFD), EU, Japan, and Regional Economic Commissions, civil society representatives and academia.

At the event, Mr. Yasusuke Tsukagoshi, Special Representative, Japan, World Bank Group announced the US$3 million grant from the Japan-World Bank Program for Mainstreaming DRM to support the regional Hydromet program.

" We believe that this grant from Japan will pave the way for a stronger and longer-term collaboration and partnership between African countries and the Tokyo DRM Hub of the World Bank. "

Improved hydromet services is helping connect African countries with advance warning of flooding and other climate related hazards. Data on hydro-meteorological records and knowledge will prove essential for farmers, communities and businesses, and will guarantee vital and reliable information is available for disaster recovery and prevention, while also providing crucial support to critical growth and development sectors such as water, energy, irrigation, tourism, transport, civil aviation and health.

The overall Africa Hydromet Program has garnered collaboration with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in addition to partnership of WMO, African Development Bank, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Food Program, and the AFD, which have formally joined forces for implementation.

" The dream of building climate resilience through information, while at the same time supporting growth sectors and industry with real time weather and climate information, as well as robust early warning systems for the communities is well on way to becoming a reality with the support from development actors such as the World Bank and other program partners. "

TICAD VI included 43 African heads of state; Shinzo Abe, Japanese Prime Minister; Jim Yong Kim, World Bank Group President; and Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary-General.
