Globally, women represent almost half of the total population, but only 41 percent of the total workforce in the formal sector. Trends suggest that gains in women’s labor force participation worldwide over the last 30 years have been small and slow. Beyond participation, there are also major differences in terms of earnings, sector, occupation, mobility, and voice. This session focuses on pervasive constraints that hinder women’s participation and success in the labor force. It reviews gender-related constraints as they appear in different contexts and sectors. Discussants draw from their research, and share ideas on solutions and policy implications. The session is hosted by the Gender and Development unit at the World Bank.
