No displacement of households is anticipated. Air quality will be impacted by pollutants and emissions from construction activities. Water will be used to wet the construction areas, proper engines will be used and properly maintained. Best management techniques for blasting will be used to reduce ground disturbance, which may result in wind and water erosion. Erosion prevention, erosion control techniques, and revegetation will also be applied. Application of wetland and stream crossing techniques will mitigate the risks of scouring and bank erosion. To minimize sedimentation in water bodies and disturbance to wetland areas, controlled procedures for wetland and water body crossings will be implemented. Wells will be properly cased to avoid aquifer interaction. Spill prevention will reduce the potential of groundwater contamination. Reduction in surface water availability will be minimized by calculating surface flow and withdrawal rate and volume. Surface water contamination can be prevented by proper disposal of hazardous materials. Vegetation clearing will be restricted to designated areas to reduce elimination of forest canopy. This report is a summary of the environmental analysis of the environmental conservation and rehabilitation project in Brazil. The components of this project are:... Show More + 1) air, water and soil pollution control and land reclamation investments in CVRD's mining, industrial, rail and port operations throughout the country; 2) natural resource investments (reforestation, conservation of natural forest and ecosystems and fauna and flora inventories and conservation); 3) socially oriented investments (municipal improvements and the Amerindian program); 4) studies, research, training, and technical assistance; 5) implementation of a comprehensive corporate environmental information, control, monitoring and auditing system; 6) erosion control in mines and along the railroad; and 7) environmental impact assessments in the project 's areas of influence. The project will have a positive impact on the environment and especially on the many indigenous peoples who live in the region. Most directly affected by the project are: 1) the Xikrin of Catete, whose reservation borders directly on the CVRD mining concession; 2) the Gaviao of Mae Maria, whose reservation is crossed by the railway line; 3) the Gaujajara of Pindare and Caru, whose reservations lie very near the railway; and 4) the Awa, who will be provided with protection and medical care. The project will substantially improve the conditions of indigenous communities, particularly in terms of health care and land demarcation. Future support for tribal communities should concentrate on the demarcation and protection of reserves, the provision of health services, and educational campaigns designed to prepare tribal communities to better manage, protect and develop the natural and other resources available to them for their own benefit. The project should also: 1) progressively reduce dependence on its actions and funding, by promoting self reliance and community participation; 2) remove itself from involvement in day to day management of the program by acting through other institutions/organizations; 3) finance actions which have been designed with the active involvement and support of the community; and 4) emphasize actions which will eventually lead to self sufficiency and which incorporate ways to achieve self management and financial self sufficiency in their design. Show Less -
