The Biodiversity Conservation Project
conserves globally important biodiversity in Argentina by a)
expanding and diversifying the existing National Protected
Areas ... Show More +System, and b) sustaining their management by
institutional strengthening, public consultation and
participation, and improving information management. As
such, the project comprises 3 components: protected areas
(PA); information management; and management, monitoring,
and evaluation. The Protected Areas component consists of
three sub-components: a) establishing and consolidating new
PAs; b) sustainable development activities in PA buffer
zones; and c) activities to enhance public participation in
park planning and management. Under these 3 sub-components,
(1) national parks are built at five national PAs in poorly
represented ecosystems; and technical assistance, limited
equipment, and small works are provided; (2) improved
community land use practices are supported through pilot
projects, extension activities, and public awareness
activities; and (3) a participation plan and a mitigation
plan are implemented to encourage broad support and to
alleviate social costs. The Biodiversity Information
Management component puts in place an internet-based network
that provides training and needed standards, finances system
development, acquires hardware, and reconfigures existing
databases. The Management, Monitoring, and Evaluation
component finances technical assistance, equipment, and
operational costs. Show Less -
