Qimiao Fan is the World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal, joining the position in March 2016 and is based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Fan oversees the Bank’s program in the three countries and leads policy dialogue with government counterparts, civil society and other partners.

A Chinese national, Fan joined the Bank in 1991 as a Young Professional with assignments working on the former Soviet Union and South Africa before becoming an economist/senior economist on Russia and CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries.

He took leave from the Bank in January 1998 to work in the private sector in various senior executive positions in China until September 2002. After returning to the Bank, Fan became Program Leader for the Investment Climate Program in the World Bank Institute. His most recent assignment was Country Manager for Cambodia.

Prior to joining the World Bank Fan worked as a researcher in development and transition economics at the London School of Economics and as a policy researcher at Jiangxi Institute of Finance and Economics in China.

He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Birmingham, England and a B.A. in Economics from Jiangxi Institute of Finance and Economics in China. He has published widely on topics related to investment climate and problems of economies in transition.
