Moctar Thiam, a Malian national born in Chad, is the World Bank's Country Manager for Mauritania. He has 30 years of professional experience, 20 of them with the World Bank Group where he worked as a transport/energy specialist and more recently as a sector leader for Sustainable Development covering Senegal, Mali, Cape Verde, The Gambia and Guinea Bissau. He holds degrees in Econometrics and Mathematics, and a master in Civil Engineering from École Nationale des Travaux Publics in Paris. After graduation, he worked as a civil engineer in France. In 1986, he moved to Mali as a director of a construction company before joining Mobil Oil as a marketing and operations manager.
