Alberto Rodriguez, an expert on educational policy and its impact on productivity and economics, from Colombia is the Director of the World Bank (WB) for Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. In this position he is responsible for the World Bank’s strategic partnerships with those five countries of the Latin America and Caribbean region, as well as for the Bank’s portfolio of projects and operations there. In his previous role, Mr. Rodriguez was Education Sector Manager for Europe and Central Asia, where he was responsible for overseeing education activities in more than 30 countries of that region. Mr. Rodriguez joined the World Bank in 1997.

He has led policy dialogue efforts and was responsible for World Bank projects in Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland, Bulgaria and Bolivia. He participated in system-wide education reform issues in all of those countries, with an emphasis on their effects on national competitiveness and economic growth.

His academic interests include education policy and administration, specifically models for financing education systems, decentralization, school-based strategic development, innovation and competitiveness, and secondary education-both general and technical/vocational. He is the author of studies demonstrating the relationship between education, competitiveness and economic growth of countries. Additionally, Rodríguez is a frequent speaker at international conferences on issues related to skills development, education reform and economic growth.

Before joining the World Bank, Rodríguez was technical secretary at the Ministry of Education of Colombia.

He graduated in Industrial Engineering from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. Additionally, he holds Master’s degrees in Education Management and Public Administration and a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Administration from the University of Michigan.
