Chart 1. GNP per Capita, 1998

GNP per capita is a country's gross national product divided by its population. Low- and middle-income countries produce about 20 percent of the world's goods and services, but have more than 80 percent of the world's population. As a result, people in these countries earn a smaller share of the world's income than people in high-income countries.
