And HIV is continuing to spread. By 2020, AIDS will account for 37 percent of adult deaths due to infectious disease in developing countries. And if we include the fact that one quarter of all tuberculosis deaths are indirectly due to HIV/AIDS, then AIDS will be the single largest cause of death from infectious disease among adults.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, the impact will be even greater. Because the countries in this region will make the most progress in reducing other causes of death, by 2020 nearly three-quarters of all adult deaths from infectious disease will be due to AIDS.
