Confronting AIDS: Public Priorities in a Global Epidemic

Corrections

Some errors were found in the first printing of Confronting AIDS. Corrections are provided below:

1. Chapter 1, Figure 1.1, p. 14. Title should say "Estimated Number of Adults with HIV/AIDS, By Region, December 1996".

2. Chapter 1, p. 22, second paragraph, second sentence: "From 1950 to 1990, dramatic progress in the fight against infectious disease raised life expectancy from 40 to 63 years in developing countries...."

3. Chapter 3, Table 3.5, p. 155: The figure for "generalized epidemic", "limited sites" should be "5", not zero.

4. Chapter 4, p. 221, second line. "...the cost of supporting a child in a foster home, estimated at $185 per year,..."

5. Chapter 5, Table 5.1, page 243. The title should read: "Average Annual 1991-93 Donor-Funded HIV/AIDS Expenditures..."

6. Chapter 5, Table 5.4, page 251. The title should read: "Donor Funding for HIV/AIDS Interventions in Developing Countries in 1991-93..."

7. Chapter 5, p. 277, first sentence of the second complete paragraph. "One example of the effective application of conditionality occurred during negotiations of the $84 million World Bank loan to India."

8. Chapter 6, p. 286, first two sentences in the section on "Preventing the Expansion of Nascent Epidemics": "Public action can make the greatest difference for the 2.3 billion people who live in areas where the epidemic is nascent. Developing areas with nascent epidemics include more than 40 percent of the world population, half of the population of developing countries and more than half of the population of low-income countries".

9. Chapter 6, box 6.1, p. 287, second column, fourth line, "and from 5 to 20 percent, respectively, between 1997 and 2000."

10. Bibliography, p. 340. The journal and volume number for the article by Estelle James is incorrect. The citation should read: James, Estelle. 1982. "The Nonprofit Sector in International Perspective: The Case of Sri Lanka." Journal of Comparative Economics 6(2): 99-129.
