![]() ARV Treatment: Special Focus Back to Main Page |
|
The articles by Katherine Floyd, Charles Gilks summarise a number of the economic issues related to antiretroviral therapy and its use for people living with HIV and AIDS in developing countries. These article conclude that ARVs are, for the most part, not an affordable or cost-effective treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS in developing countries. However, alternative drug dosages may be discovered to be as effective as those currently recommended, and drug companies may be able to reduce their prices once the costs of drug development have been recouped. For this reason, the affordability and the effectiveness of ARVs need to be periodically assessed. Given the evidence analysed in this article, 2 key questions for the debate over the next 3 weeks appear to be: 1. Defining whether or not economic research on the use of ARV treatments is actually relevant to developing countries, and if so 2. Defining the main components of a preliminary research agenda. |
