Excuse me, but I cannot agree with this approach (and that of Claude Kamenga) to the problem. I know that people are suffering while we are discussing. I know, too, that, based on the same type of generous but short thinking you are using today, the medical system developped and created huge injustice ! I know why so many patients are not receiving the care they need, even if they (or the society) can pay the cost ; I know that, at the same time, physicians and the pharmaceutical industry are making money with unnecessary care and undue margins ! We must now take into account the fact that no one society can afford the cost of all medical care that would be in order to give every patient "all that the modern medical science can offer", because of limited (individual and national) resoources. Therefore we cannot answer the question with mere compassionate thinking, with mere individualistic answers, we must discuss the criteria for 'just' health care, for an equitable distribution of health care among the patients. I tried to enter this discussion in my presentation of an exemple : the UNAIDS strategy in Côte d'Ivoire. () For a thorough discussion of the question of 'just' health care, as applied to our problem, we certainly need the help of moral philosophy specialists : may I suggest this line of discussion to be included in the agenda of the forum ?
