Confronting AIDS: The Economics of Prevention and Treatment?

A full day seminar to be held Tuesday, May 12, 1998 9:30am-5:00pm, in room H2-300.

(A meeting of the AIDS Economics Network)

This workshop will focus on questions: What are the priorities for public intervention in the AIDS epidemic in developing countries? Should policymakers be concerned? And what are the priority measures to be taken in countries overwhelmed by the epidemic? How should national governments in the developing world respond to the increasing pressure for them to fund the new antiretroviral treatments used in the north?

This course is an expanded version of the highly successful module offered during HD Week. In addition to a presentation by Martha Ainsworth and Mead Over of the main messages of the recent Policy Research Report on AIDS, it will include presentations by Nicholas Prescott (EASHN), Joseph Brunet-Jailly (ORSTOM, Abidjan) and Jorge Saavedra (Mexico City) of papers which examine the costs, benefits and affordability of alternative policies toward public funding of antiretroviral therapy within the contexts of Thailand, Cote d'Ivoire and Mexico. Ample time is allowed for discussion among Bank participants and outside resource people who are affiliated with the AIDS Economic Network.

A reception/breakfast at 9:30 AM and a box lunch will be provided thanks to the support of USAID's HIV/AIDS Policy Project.
