African Economic Research Consortium (AERC)
AERC, established in 1988, is a public not-for-profit organization devoted to advanced policy research and training in economics. Its principal objective is to strengthen local capacity for conducting independent, rigorous inquiry into problems pertinent to the management of economics in Sub Saharan Africa.
KENYA
Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA)
KIPPRA is an autonomous public institute whose primary mission is to provide quality public policy advice to the government of Kenya and to the private sector by conducting objective research and analysis, and through capacity building, in order to contribute to the achievement of national development goals. The Institute aims to contribute to economic growth, wealth creation and poverty reduction by providing information to policy makers in the government, to the private sector, and to the civil society in order to improve public policy making and implementation. KIPPRA is therefore a central source of information and advice on a wide range of policy issues. The vision of the Institute is to become the leading public policy research institute in Africa, an international centre of excellence.
Institute of Policy Analysis and Research (IPAR)
IPAR was established in 1994 as an independent, indigenous and non-partisan private organisation. It is a non-profit body whose primary goal is to pursue quality research-based public policy analysis and to generate non-partisan discussion focused on Kenya and the region.
Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development
The vision for Tegemeo Institute is contributing toward a better Kenya by excelling in policy research and analysis that improves policy formulation and implementation . Tegemeo Institute aspires to become a center of excellence in policy research in agriculture and natural resources. Policies formulated through this process if adopted and implemented could contribute to the welfare of the citizenry thus making Kenya a better country to live in.
Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS)
CBS in the Ministry of Planning and National Development is responsible for collecting, analyzing and disseminating socio-economic statistics needed for planning and policy formulation in Kenya. CBS aims to achieve excellence in the provision of timely, reliable and affordable official statistics for informed decision making to maximize the welfare of all Kenyans.
Ministry of Planning and National Development (MoPND)
The Ministry aims to promote and sustain prudent and optimal management of the national resources for the betterment and prosperity of all Kenyans. Currently the Ministry is made up of the following departments; CBS, Central Planning & Coordination, Macro-Planning, Economic Basic Infrastructure, National Council and Population, Regional International Economic Cooperation, Research and Development, Budget Monitoring Department, Human Resources & Social Services Department, Rural Planning Department, PSRP/ MTEF Secretariat, Efficiency Monitoring Unit, Administration, Personnel, Finance, NEPAD.
UGANDA
Centre for asic Research (CBR)
CBR was established in 1988 to become a centre of greater excellence spearheading dissemination of appropriate basic and policy information and knowledge in collaboration with partners and clients for sustainable development. CBR’s mission is to disseminate knowledge by conducting basic and applied research of social, economic and political significance to Uganda and Africa, so as to influence policy, raise consciousness and improve quality of life.
Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS)
UBOS in the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development is responsible for coordinating all statistical activities in Uganda. UBOS is therefore, coordinating the development and maintenance of a National Statistical System which will ensure collection, analysis and dissemination of integrated, reliable and timely statistical information.
Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MFPED)
MFPED manages and controls public finances in a sustainable manner, to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of all public spending and to oversee the planning of national strategic development initiatives in order to facilitate economic growth, efficiency, stability, eradication of poverty and enhancement of overall development.
Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC)
TANZANIA
Economic & Social Research Foundation (ESRF)
ESRF was established in 1994 as an independent, not-for-profit institution for research and policy analysis. There was need and demand for an improved understanding of policy options and development management issues, and that the capacity for this was lacking in the Tanzania civil service. The primary objectives of the ESRF are to strengthen capabilities in policy analysis and development management and to enhance the understanding of policy options in the government, the public sector, civil society, and the donor community and the growing private sector. For the period 2003-2006 ESRF focuses on four main activities namely; policy research, capacity building, policy work and dissemination and knowledge and information sharing.
Research on Poverty Alleviation (REPOA)S
REPOA was established in 1995 with the mandate to undertake and facilitate research on poverty related issues. Research provides the means for the acquisition of knowledge and information which are in turn necessary conditions for improving the quality of policy making and hence the quality of the Tanzanian society. The long-term vision of the REPOA is to create, maintain and enhance indigenous research capacity in Tanzania, particularly in the area of poverty alleviation.
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)
The mission of NBS is to facilitate planning and decision making within the government to stimulate research and inform public debate through the provision of relevant, reliable and timely statistics and a quality statistical service in general.
