Poverty Analysis and Data Initiative (PADI)

Events

PADI organizes a series of events to share regional experience, learn from international best practice, receive specialized training, and disseminate research results. These events are hosted by different countries in the region on a rotating basis. Conferences are open to the public to ensure that a large number of policy makers and researchers gain from PADI. The budgets for the events may be transferred to the local implementing agency (national chapter or other institution) against contractual commitments.

  Presentations:

Analyses the determinants of vulnerability, vulnerability as a measure of poverty. Focuses on rural households in Kenya (in particular non-pastoral communities in arid and semi-arid and humid and sub humid zones) their risk factors, risk exposures and coping capacities.

Understanding vulnerability is important, as it is an ex-ante measure of well being. Christiaensen examines the use of vulnerability assessments to inform policy thus, the need to measure vulnerability and to understand the causes of vulnerability.

Gives an introduction to KHDS-2 research project, that focuses on the long-term wealth dynamics of individuals and households over the past 10 years in Kagera. Specific emphasis on morbidity and mortality shocks as the Kagera region has been hard hit by HIV/AIDS. Concluding that it is feasible to find respondents from previous surveys and thus construct a panel.

Distinguishes between non-income dimensions of poverty and income poverty (poverty incidence). Focusing on small vulnerable groups such as; people with disabilities, vulnerable children, vulnerable women, elderly and the difficulty associated with welfare statistics for small groups.

Describes two aspects of vulnerability among pastoralists: income vulnerability and asset vulnerability, using evidence from Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia. Contrasted income poverty with asset poverty and developed a ranking system of risk from the PARIMA survey.

The presentation focuses on the theoretical framework of commodity insurance, data requirements and adaptation to Ghana and estimates of willingness to pay (for commodity price insurance must be analysed in the context of existing insurance systems) and comparison with actual put option prices.

The presentation seeks to broaden the understanding of the depth and causes of household vulnerability in Tanzania and explores the potential of market based insurance schemes to alleviate vulnerability.
