Masters
in Energy and Development
EDRC
is offering registration towards a Masters degree in Energy and
Development. The programme consists of a series of taught modules,
a self-study project, and a research dissertation. It is envisaged
that full-time students will complete the degree in eighteen months.
Part-time registration is permitted, but will take longer to complete
the requirements. The key elements of the degree are
Introduction
to energy policy
This course will be run in the first Quarter (February to April)
and will introduce students to key energy policy issues, as well
as providing training in research skills.
Energy
in poverty and development
This course is offered in the second Quarter (April to June)
and is concerned with the relationship between energy use, energy
service provision, and poverty
Energy
markets and governance
This course will be run in the third Quarter (July to September)
and will cover the theory and practice of energy sector governance
and regulation.
Energy
policy project
A self-study module, in which the student is required to undertake
a policy analysis project. This may be undertaken in parallel with
the other courses, or in the fourth quarter.
Other
courses
There are a range of other Masters level courses at the University
of Cape Town. Subject to EDRC and Faculty approval, students may
attend these courses in place of the Energy Policy Project option
Masters
dissertation
If students successfully complete the above coursework, they
can attain the Masters degree on completion of a 'half-dissertation'.
Students will be required to submit a research proposal by the end
of the academic year and will be expected to complete the dissertation
in June the following year
Other
Activities
Other activities in which students will be expected to participate
in include special colloquia by invited quests; research seminars
by EDRC staff members, and field trips to energy projects, including
power stations, electrification projects, housing projects, an oil
refinery and others.
